About Kexuan Zhao
I'm Kexuan Zhao, an illustrator from Shanghai, China, currently living in New York City. I graduated from Parsons School of Design with a degree in Illustration for my undergrad, and now I'm pursuing my master's at Teachers College, Columbia University, in the field of Art Education.
My artworks revolve around Eastern imagery, exploring aspects of human nature and the ever-changing world around us.
I'm a chatterbox, to put it more elegantly, I have a strong desire to express myself. For me, creating is like having a warm bed, a place to accommodate the unspeakable parts of language. The starting point of my creation is the moment of inspiration or a sudden desire. However, if I don't promptly translate these abstract moments into tangible expressions on paper, those inspirations will dissipate like the wind. Hence, a creator must be someone with a calm mind and the ability to control their desires.
Most illustration enthusiasts love it because it's a clever rhetoric that blurs the boundary between reality and fantasy. Essentially, illustration is storytelling, and everyone enjoys a compelling story. So, I strive to be a good storyteller, leaving the rest to time and this abstract era.
